As of October 1st, there are about 90 days remaining in 2019; which, also means there are 90 days left in this decade.
How do you want to start 2020?
Are you hoping to break out in your career and move up to the next level?
Do you want to find an organization that better appreciates the value you offer?
Can you articulate your value?
Can you tell the story of where you want to be, rather than the narrative of where you’ve been?
Begin With the End in Mind
Stephen Covey, in his influential book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, reminds us to begin with the end in mind–envision what you want so you can work and plan toward it.
This is a great time of year to do just that.
Think about your career goals for the end of the year. Where do you want to be? Are you on track to get there? If not, what’s holding you back? Where could you use some help?
Backward Mapping
In my work with folks wrestling with these issues, we engage in “backward mapping.”
We’ll identify the goals they want to achieve by December 31st. Then we’ll create specific actions that need to occur at certain points in the calendar between now and then.
For example, if the desired goal is to have a new position by December 31, what needs to happen by December 15? By December 1? By November 15? By October 15 (a mere week away!)?
